Every year, too many Americans suffer from work-related injuries that cause them pain and suffering, and a loss of income. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that in 1994, 705,800 cases (32%) of all injuries that resulted in days away from work were due to overexertion and repetitive motion.

Most of these cases affected the back, and were caused by overexertion in lifting, pushing or pulling objects. Repetitive injuries were caused by typing or key entry, repetitive use of tools and repetitive placing, grasping, or moving of objects other than tools. Most of the repetitive injuries affected the wrist, with the shoulder and back involved in a small percentage of cases.

These injuries are classified as work-related musculoskeletal disorders. WMSDs can cause severe and debilitating symptoms such as pain, numbness and tingling; reduced worker productivity, lost time from work; temporary or permanent disability; inability to perform tasks and increased worker’s compensation costs.
