Slip & Falls

The most common types of accidents that lead to injury are known as “slip and falls.” These injuries can occur due to a number of things including a slippery or rough surface, problems with shoes, or the mental/physical condition of the person who took the fall. People can also injure themselves by tripping over items, or catching their feet on an uneven surface such as a tattered carpet or tiles that change levels without warning.

The impact from a slip and fall causes trauma to a person’s bones, joints, muscles and ligaments along the nervous system. This trauma frequently causes misalignments in the spine and interruptions in the signals within the nervous system.

The good news is that the human body has a tremendous capacity to heal itself. Chiropractors respect the body’s natural healing power. Their non-invasive techniques and spinal manipulation help to bring the body’s musculoskeletal and nervous system back into sync when it has been injured during a slip and fall.

Sometimes a slip and fall can cause serious injury. A chiropractor will examine a patient who has been injured in a slip and fall, and order x-rays to determine the extent of the trauma. If there has been serious injury to the discs that make up the bone structure of the spine, the chiropractor will refer the patient to an orthopedic surgeon for treatment.

Once a slip and fall injury has healed sufficiently, the chiropractor will begin the rehabilitation process by performing a series of exercises to help the patient return strength and flexibility to the injured area. In the beginning, the chiropractor may move the injured parts through their normal range of motion until the patient has healed to the point where they can perform the exercises on their own.

Many times, older people suffer slip and fall injuries in their homes. As we age, our bones can become brittle unless we remain active and perform weight-bearing exercises that keep our hips and legs strong and limber. An easy way to prevent injury is to walk at least 30 minutes every day, and be careful when walking at night or in severe weather conditions.

You can prevent many slip and fall injuries by being alert for hazards in your physical environment, and by maintaining a healthy body through good nutrition, exercise and regular chiropractic checkups to keep your spine in alignment.
