Physical therapy helps to reduce pain and dysfunction by engaging patients in a specific sequence of exercises, manual therapy and modalities. Physical therapy is effective for patients of all ages who suffer from pain, a physical delay, disease or injury that limits their ability to move and perform normal everyday activities. During therapy, a physical therapist focuses on improving muscle (soft tissue) flexibility and strength, joint biomechanics (movement) and proprioception (positional awareness). As a result, patients achieve increased balance, coordination, kinesthetic awareness and improved posture.
Some of the common issues that are treated with physical therapy include:
• Musculoskeletal disorders such as knee injuries, shoulder injuries, back & neck pains,
sprains or strains
• Neurological problems such as strokes or cerebral palsy
Post-surgical rehabilitation after knee surgery, shoulder, spine or back surgery.
Physical therapists focus on indentifying and maximizing quality of life and movement potential within the spheres of promotion, prevention, treatment/intervention, habilitation and rehabilitation. Each patient receives a customized treatment plan based on their diagnosis, laboratory and imaging studies. Physical therapy may include the use of electrical stimulation of the nerves and/or muscles, ultrasound, traction, hotpacks, coldpacks, whirlpools, intermittent compression pumps, and myofascial release, along with massage therapy and joint mobilization exercise.
The goal of physical therapy is to relieve pain, avoid contractures, prevent disabilities, help restore maximum physical movement, function and balance. It involves commitment and effort on the part of the patient. On average, therapy typically lasts 4-6 weeks. Patients who follow their therapist’s recommendations receive the most benefit from their rehab program. Clinical studies have shown maximum recovery within a reduced amount of time in patients who combine physical therapy with chiropractic adjustments.
